Trump v. Musk

Ever since Elon Musk joined forces with Donald Trump, we on the Reasonable Left have predicted a messy break-up. Those two egos won't get along forever, we figured. Finally, it happened, but not until Musk was allowed to run roughshod through our government, firing thousands, crippling some agencies, like the IRS and USAID, and decapitating other agencies that just happened to be investigating Musk or one of his companies for fraud and violating various regulations. Musk conveniently crippled parts of the government that were "after" him. All for the low, low price of $275 million or so, give or take a few million. A bargain. 

I tend to stop, now and then, and wonder, is all of this just some kabuki theater? Are they setting us up for some other heinous act? We have seen what they are capable of: cruelty, insanity, bribery, grifting corruption, amorality, and a disdain for the actual functioning of government. They do seem to not care how badly they fuck shit up, apparently thinking that, after they destroy it sufficiently, things will continue normally and they will cash in bigly. Killing the golden goose, anyone? But I guess there is a lot of plunder to be had before the goose is fully cooked.

UPDATE - This started out being entertaining - but now it is deadly serious. Musk has the information to destroy Trump and his presidency. Musk already dropped the bomb that Trump is in the Epstein files. Trump has threatened to cut Musk's government contracts, and Musk posted he is already decommissioning his spacecraft. Steve Bannon has chimed in that he "strongly believes" Musk is an "illegal alien" who should be deported.

Musk has been ranting for 3 days now about Trump's "Big Beautiful Budget Bill". Trump says he knows why. 

TRUMP: "Elon’s upset because we took the EV mandate, which was a lot of money for electric vehicles and they’re having a hard time with electric vehicles and they want us to pay billions and billions of dollars in subsidy. Elon knew this from the beginning."

MUSK shot back on X: “This bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!”

Musk continued:"Whatever. Keep the EV/solar incentive cuts in the bill, even though no oil & gas subsidies are touched (very unfair!!), but ditch the MOUNTAIN of DISGUSTING PORK in the bill."

Trump told the reporters today that everything's fine and praised the work Musk did, and said he will still be "back and forth, I think." 

BUT: "I'll be honest, I think he misses the place. He's not the first. People leave my administration and they love us. And then, at some point, they miss it so badly. And some of them embrace it and some of them actually become hostile. I don't know what it is. It's sort of Trump derangement syndrome, I guess they call it." 

Trump brought up the black eye Musk was sporting Friday: 

“I said do you want a little makeup? We’ll get you a little makeup. but he said ‘no, I don’t think so,’ which is interesting and very nice. He wants to be who he is.”

AH - But is Trump really who HE is? 

On X, Elon Musk has been digging up old posts of Trump criticizing past federal budgets. “I couldn’t agree more,” Musk wrote as a caption for one 2012 post from Trump that reads, “deficits not allowed!” 

Musk later doubled down on this post. “Where is the man who wrote these words? Was he replaced by a body double!?

A body double? Gee. Seems to be a lot of those going around these days. 

But Musk was there. He would know. ;)

Welp. The first match is over, and the second has begun. 

Trump's Oval Office meeting is over, and he has moved onto Truth Social, where he just wrote that Musk was “wearing thin” by the end of his tenure leading the president’s Department of Government Efficiency and..... "I asked him to leave".

“I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!” Trump wrote in the post.

It didn't end there. Trump just posted: “The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts. I was always surprised that Biden didn’t do it!”

Annnnnd Musk responded on X with laughing emojis: 

"This just keeps getting better and better. Go ahead. Make my day."

Musk has just "unfollowed" Stephen Miller. Miller's wife works for Musk in communications, and left the White House with Musk to be wherever he works. This calls for a bowl of popcorn of its own.

WHOA - NOW Musk is getting personal. "TIME TO DROP THE REALLY BIG BOMB". Musk writes that Trump “is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT” 

The New York Times is reporting that Musk would know about that, too. Musk has his own connections to Jeffrey Epstein, who told the NYT in 2018 that he was a financial adviser to Musk. In 2014 Musk was photographed at a party in 2014 with Ghislaine Maxwell.

AND House Democrats are already making a formal demand that AG Pam Bondi release the Epstein files NOW.

NYT says that last year, Musk’s companies (mostly SpaceX) were promised $3 billion across nearly 100 different contracts with 17 federal agencies. With Trump threatening to cancel them, stock in Musk's competitors is rising today as quickly as Musk's is tanking. 

The Hill is reporting that Musk posted on X: “Is it time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle.” 

Musk attached a survey to his post that allowed users to vote “yes” or “no” on the idea of a third political party.

NYT is reporting that Steve Bannon is urging Trump to cancel all Musk contracts - AND revoke his security clearance - AND - investigate his immigration status, which he "strongly believes is illegal" - AND - start an investigation into his drug use. Oh. AND deport him. 

Question - The DOGE hackers are loyal to Musk. Will Trump kick them out too? (Crossing fingers!)

CNBC is reporting that Musk just posted on X: “In light of the President’s statement about cancellation of my government contracts, @SpaceX will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately.”  

That is the spacecraft used to carry astronauts and cargo to the International Space Station for NASA.

One is currently docked there - hopefully Musk won't abandon the 4 astronauts there. Without Dragon, NASA would find itself in an immediate bind because it does not have any other readily available alternatives to carry astronauts, food or supplies to the space station.

AND - Elon Musk just agreed with another post saying that Trump should be impeached and JD Vance should replace him.

Trump is scheduled to host a Roundtable with the Fraternal Order of Police at 4pm ET. We will see how that goes - or IF it goes.... 

UPDATE: Trump showed up 10 minutes late, and is trying to look upbeat with Pam Bondi smiling beside him. He is reading from prepared notes... but when he goes off-script to add personal comments, he is sounding a bit.... bitter... He is using the opening to plug his Big Beautiful Bill, which he says is "doing nicely" but which is apparently looking dead in the Senate... Bondi is speaking now. Trump has closed his notebook and is definitely not engaged. 

Strange - after the opening remarks, including the FOP's gushing praise of Trump - the Live feed was CUT. The camera showed crazy angles - is Trump leaving? 

Apparently so. The feud continues, with Trump on Truth Social, and Musk on X.

Biden's a robot

Uh, right. Joe Biden was executed in 2020 and was replaced by a robot and clones, says Donald Trump. The writer below believes that it is a deliberate move by Trump, a way to distract from all the bullshit Trump is pulling. Could be, but I still think Trump is the stupidest president in history. He's not a genius, just a thug. Basically a mafia-wannabe. To reach a point where a president has to make up absurdly ridiculous shit to cover up the other absurdly ridiculous shit that he is causing doesn't say anything good about our democracy.

I still believe Trump & Co stole the 2024 election and ensured a Republican majority in the House and Senate, thanks to shenanigans by Elon Musk. Trump does not deserve to occupy that office, and I don't care how many mindless morons and greed heads voted for him.

Over the weekend, Donald Trump, the man currently occupying the most powerful office on Earth, in case you needed any reminder, spread a deranged conspiracy theory claiming Joe Biden was executed in 2020 and replaced by a robot clone.

I saw this post on one of my social feeds, and I didn’t believe it, so I checked, and it was sadly true. It's a repost from someone else, but it’s still absolutely unbelievable.

This weekend alone, as war escalated in Ukraine and Gaza, Trump's “big beautiful bill” came under attack in town halls in red districts, and it was reported that ICE had detained a congressional aide a few days ago, this is what the president of the United States wants Americans to focus on, Biden’s mental health.

But what he’s really doing is changing the subject with some bizarre sci-fi bedtime story ripped from a Reddit thread and soaked in QAnon Kool-Aid. A conspiracy theory only the equally wacko Laura Loomer would appreciate.

This is not just lunacy. It’s a deliberate political tactic. Trump peddles this madness to distract from the wreckage of his own presidency. It’s a desperate effort to shift the spotlight away from the authoritarian, un-American disasters piling up under his watch. Just last Wednesday, a congressional aide was arrested under the guise of immigration enforcement. Not a cartel leader. Not a violent criminal. A staffer working for Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler. In the congressman’s office.

This is what fascism looks like — when ICE in pseudo-MAGA hats pretends it’s keeping us safe.

Trump would rather feed the fever dreams of the internet than answer for the fact that the wars he said he’d end on day one are not only still active but more deadly than when he was sworn in. A deadly Israeli strike in Gaza that killed 32 civilians waiting for U.S.-backed food aid and the Ukrainian drone strikes deep in Russia that's been called “Russia’s Pearl Harbor" expose the growing crisis of wars he has utterly failed to mediate, end, or let alone control.

Remember when Trump said he'd end the wars on day one, or something like that? Just another fantastical thing Trump ranted about on Truth Social that bears no resemblance to reality.

And back home, the backlash continues to Trump’s House-passed legislation that takes from the poor and gives to the rich. At an Iowa town hall, Republican U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst dismissed constituents' fears over Medicaid cuts in Trump's "big beautiful bill" with a flippant "Well, we all are going to die.”

Just let me say here that I saw this on social media and also double-checked to make sure that it was true. And yes, as unbelievable as it may seem, she really said that.

It gets worse. She later doubled down by posting a sarcastic Instagram video from a graveyard, mocking their concerns and urging them to "embrace my lord and savior, Jesus Christ" for eternal life.

But let’s return to Trump’s Biden-bot theory. Where on Earth would a sitting president feel emboldened enough to amplify such a fantasy?

Enter CNN’s Jake Tapper, whose responsibility during the final years of Biden’s presidency was to report the facts about the president’s health. Instead, Tapper turned the decline of an aging public servant into a cash grab, selling his “original sin” as a tell-all book.

In doing so, he is fanning the flames of speculation, offering no clarity to the public, and now wonders why no one trusts journalism. His reward? Tanking ratings and the moral equivalent of tabloid shame.

Trump didn’t invent this lie from scratch. He just picked up where irresponsible media and cowardly press secretaries left off. White House mouthpiece Karoline Leavitt, for example, recently called Jill Biden “complicit” in her husband’s condition and smeared Joe Biden — now battling advanced prostate cancer — as mentally incompetent. Her venom is proof that cruelty, not truth, is the White House's guiding principle.

Biden, let’s remember, is no longer president. He is a private citizen, suffering through a grave illness with dignity and moral and mental clarity. He is no longer governing. Trump is. And for Trump to weaponize a grotesque fantasy about his predecessor being executed and replaced by a machine, without a shred of humanity or sanity, is beyond disgraceful.

The only person here who seems unwell is the one who can’t stop rage-posting conspiracy theories from his golf cart.

When a president openly promotes this idea about his predecessor, we get deeper into dangerous territory now, not just because of the lie itself, but because of what it says about the man spreading it. The world is watching, and while they’re laughing, they’re also panic-stricken.

We’re being governed by someone who is either completely untethered from reality or so manipulative that he’s willing to plunge the nation deeper into paranoia to distract from his own failures. All of that sounds too rational. Frankly, there is no rationalizing Trump anymore.

He’s mindlessly short-circuiting every norm, every truth, and every shred of American decency left in his path, and we’re not even at six months. Over the next four years, let’s hope that Trump is replaced somewhere along the way with a robot. We’d most certainly be in more capable hands.

Here in deep South Texas we are feeling the effects of smoke streaming north from Mexican agricultural fires while we are being slowly covered by Saharan dust. It's not that safe to even go outside, especially if you have respiratory issues. Meanwhile, those further north are getting heavy smoke from wildfires in Canada. And a tropical storm is brewing off the SE coast. Hey, Mount Etna is erupting again, as is Kilauea in Hawaii. And Trump is still alive. Maybe he's the robot. They ARE big on projection, y'know.

A Haze Over North America

More than 180 wildland fires burned across Canada on June 1, 2025, continuing what has been an active fire year so far. Some of the fires produced plumes so thick and widespread they were easily visible from a vantage point in space well beyond that of the Moon.

NASA’s EPIC (Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera) on NOAA’s DSCOVR satellite acquired this image on May 31, 2025. The instrument is positioned 1.5 million kilometers (1 million miles) from Earth’s surface, which is about four times farther than the orbit of the Moon. For comparison, most polar orbiting satellites that observe Earth orbit at an altitude of less than 1,000 kilometers. From its distant position, EPIC captures a color image of the entire sunlit side of Earth at least once every two hours.

The EPIC wide view shows smoke from fires burning primarily in the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The plumes extend to the north-northeast across Nunavut toward the coast of Greenland and southward across the United States. Another patch of smoke is visible over the Atlantic Ocean near Europe. Note that the hazy air west of Africa is not smoke but dust that has blown westward from the Sahara Desert.

The blazes forced tens of thousands of people across three provinces to evacuate. Around 5,000 evacuated from Flin Flon as a major blaze crossed from Saskatchewan into Manitoba, according to news reports. This fire, among many others, led officials to declare a state of emergency in Saskatchewan and Manitoba in late May.

Smoke from the fires burning in Canada has raised health concerns as airborne particles degraded air quality locally and in several U.S. states. In Michigan, officials issued an air quality advisory on May 30, noting that the air could become unhealthy for sensitive groups. On June 2, Minnesota issued an air quality alert, as particle pollution in the state’s northwest neared hazardous levels for all people.

The jet stream pulled smoke even farther south. The detailed image above, acquired May 31 with the VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) on the NOAA-21 satellite, shows smoke reaching northern Florida. Smoke-affected states farther from the fires saw mostly good to moderate air quality. Still, smoke high in the air can tint skies orange and contribute to some striking sunsets.

Since the start of the year, 1,586 fires have burned more than 1 million hectares across Canada, according to a report issued June 1 by the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Center. In 2024, the country saw 1,343 fires burn less than half a million hectares by the same date. Canada’s wildfire season has historically run from late April to August, but fires can happen any time of the year.

Musk's Legacy

Michelle Goldberg of the New York Times hits the nail on the head here, like she does often.

It stretches credulity that Trump and the Republicans let Musk run rampant in the government, firing people, closing agencies and doing whatever the fuck he wants. But, hey, he's the richest man in the world, how could he do anything wrong? Plus, he's on the GOP's side, so, go for it, rocket boy!

If there is any justice left in this world, Musk, a lot of the GOP, and especially Trump, will be brought up on charges once we get them out of the government. IF we get them out of the government.

There is evidence that the destruction of USAID did indeed result in the death of many, mostly children, despite the GOP denials. 

Elon Musk's Legacy is Disease, Starvation and Death

There is an Elon Musk post on X, his social media platform, that should define his legacy. “We spent the weekend feeding USAID into the wood chipper,” he wrote on Feb. 3. He could have “gone to some great parties. Did that instead.”

Musk’s absurd scheme to save the government a trillion dollars by slashing “waste, fraud and abuse” has been a failure. The Department of Government Efficiency claims it’s saved $175 billion, but experts believe the real number is significantly lower. Meanwhile, according to the Partnership for Public Service, which studies the federal work force, DOGE’s attacks on government personnel — its firings, rehirings, use of paid administrative leave and all the associated lack of productivity — could cost the government upwards of $135 billion this fiscal year, even before the price of defending DOGE’s actions in court. Musk’s rampage through the bureaucracy might not have created any savings at all, and if it did, they were negligible.

Now Musk’s Washington adventure is coming to an end, with the disillusioned billionaire announcing that he’s leaving government behind. “It sure is an uphill battle trying to improve things in D.C., to say the least,” he told The Washington Post.

There is one place, however, where Musk, with the help of his minions, achieved his goals. He did indeed shred the United States Agency for International Development. Though a rump operation is operating inside the State Department, the administration says that it has terminated more than 80 percent of U.S.A.I.D. grants. Brooke Nichols, an associate professor of global health at Boston University, has estimated that these cuts have already resulted in about 300,000 deaths, most of them of children, and will most likely lead to significantly more by the end of the year. That is what Musk’s foray into politics accomplished.

White House officials deny that their decimation of U.S.A.I.D. has had fatal consequences. At a hearing in the House last week, Democrats confronted Secretary of State Marco Rubio with my colleague Nicholas Kristof’s reporting from East Africa, documenting suffering and death caused by the withdrawal of aid. Rubio insisted no such deaths have happened, but people who’ve been in the field say he’s either lying or misinformed.

Atul Gawande, an assistant administrator for global health at U.S.A.I.D. in Joe Biden’s administration, told me that during a trip to Kenya last week, he visited the national referral hospital. There’s been a major increase in the number of patients with advanced H.I.V. symptoms, a result of losing access to antiretroviral medication. At refugee camps on the border of South Sudan, food aid has been cut so severely that people are getting less than 30 percent of the calories they need. “It is not enough to survive on, and that has caused skyrocketing levels of severe malnutrition and deaths associated with it,” said Gawande.

Musk apparently did not anticipate that it would be bad P.R. for the world’s richest man to take food and medicine from the world’s poorest children. The Post reported that he hadn’t foreseen “the intensity of the blowback to his role in politics over the past year.” He’s been doing a series of interviews that Axios called an “image rehab tour.”

If there were justice in the world, Musk would never be able to repair his reputation, at least not without devoting the bulk of his fortune to easing the misery he’s engendered. Musk’s sojourn in government has revealed severe flaws in his character — a blithe, dehumanizing cruelty and a deadly incuriosity. This should shape how he’s seen for the rest of his public life.

Musk sometimes refers to people he holds in contempt as “NPCs,” videogame-speak for characters who aren’t controlled by players and thus have no agency. More than just an insult, the term, I think, reveals something about his worldview. He either doesn’t view most other people as entirely real or doesn’t see the point of treating them as such. As he told Joe Rogan this year, “The fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy,” referring to the emotion as a “bug” in our system.

Yet even as he prides himself on dispassionate rigor, Musk has proved remarkably uninterested in figuring out how the government that he sought to transform really works. Samantha Power, head of U.S.A.I.D. under Biden, told me she tried to speak with members of the new administration, hoping to convince them there were elements of U.S.A.I.D.’s work that they could leverage for their own agenda. But aside from one meeting with transition officials, her outreach was ignored.

Instead, Musk seemed to derive his view of the agency from conspiracy theorists on X. There, he called U.S.A.I.D. a “radical-left political psy op” and amplified a post from the right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos smearing it as “the most gigantic global terror organization in history.”

It would have been easy for Musk to take his private plane to a country like Uganda to see for himself the work U.S.A.I.D. has done providing medicine to people with H.I.V. or feeding refugees from South Sudan. Instead, he drew on the counsel of internet trolls and staffed DOGE with lackeys who were similarly ignorant. “If you heard the conversations U.S.A.I.D. staff had with the DOGE people, there is no word in any language that captures the level of obliviousness about what U.S.A.I.D. actually did,” said Power.

This kind of intellectual carelessness should make people re-evaluate their faith in Musk’s brilliance. “Being president doesn’t change who you are; it reveals who you are,” Michelle Obama has said. The same is true, apparently, of being the president’s best friend, even fleetingly.

Impeach!

I have not been active at all here on this blog. It's bad enough that Trump is nothing but sad, depressing news; at the same time, we have decided to move away from South Padre Island and go about 80 miles inland, which is also quite stressful; at the same time, I have been having multiple bouts of high blood pressure and shortness of breath. One was so bad that I felt like I was having a heart attack and my wife drove me to the Emergency Room at midnight a couple of weeks ago. The hospital kept me until 4:30am. The diagnosis was "medication-derived hypokalemia," which means very low levels of potassium, and they blamed its on my Rx of hydrochlorothiazide. This is primarily a diuretic, often prescribed with other meds to control blood pressure. Turns out this diuretic also tends to drain the potassium from your system. Oops. My potassium level was 2.8, which is well below the "normal" range of 3.5-5.1.

They hooked me up to an IV and put a lot of potassium into my body. Getting an IV of potassium hurt like hell. It burned and burned. But my BP finally got down into an acceptable range. They also took a chest x-ray to reveal my heart was a normal size, and there were no other signs of trouble. 

The problem is that I keep having some high BP readings. They are no fun. I feel rundown and don't want to do much around the house, like preparing for the move. 

What's more, my wife recently broke a front tooth, and several dental appointments followed, throwing another level of stress on top of the pile.

I feel like stress is the primary cause of my high BP. Try as I might, I cannot bring it down, even after adding high-potassium foods into my diet. I got an appt with my General Practitioner, and all the blood work turned out fine. I am still trying to get in to see my Cardiologist, three weeks after my "episode." Everybody says this doc is a great Cardiologist, but she isn't doing too much to reach out and talk with me.

So everything is a mess. Trump, the move, high blood pressure, my wife's broken tooth, we recently hired a house painter to prep the house for the move, we now have a Real Estate agent, it's nothing but stress. Normally I have been able to handle stress pretty well, but I don't think I have ever experienced so many stressors at once.

I probably won't be too active here or anywhere else online until things settle down, and I have no idea when that will be. Wish me luck.

CONGRESSMAN SHRI THANEDAR INTRODUCES ARTICLES OF IMPEACHMENT AGAINST PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP FOR HIGH CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS

Washington, DC - Today, Congressman Shri Thanedar (MI-13) introduced articles of impeachment against Donald J. Trump, President of the United States, citing a sweeping abuse of power, flagrant violations of the Constitution, and acts of tyranny that undermine American democracy and threaten the rule of law.

"Donald Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he is unfit to serve as President and represents a clear and present danger to our nation’s constitution and our democracy," said Rep. Thanedar. "His unlawful actions have subverted the justice system, violated the separation of powers, and placed personal power and self-interest above public service. We cannot wait for more damage to be done. Congress must act."
