Phase 3 Complete

Today, after the sun passed behind the house and the front yard was bathed in shadow, we dug up another 12 sq feet of our front yard and put down shale, sand and rocks.

Here's the before pic.....a small sea of green grass

We dug up the top layer of grass and pulled out as many grass runners as we could, then put some newspaper on top of the tilled soil to suffocate any further grass growth.

Then we
came in with a layer of sand....and then we lay the stone on top of the sand....

Finally, fill in the spaces with rocks...

We did this to basically expand the driveway a bit. When you get out of the car, you won't have to step into wet grass, or hidden dog turds.

Couldn't ask for nicer weather all weekend. We seem to have gotten quite a lot of great weather lately. Low 80's, low humidity, cool breezes in the shade. The ultimate goal is to tear up the entire front yard of grass and plant shrubs, flowers, and things edible. It's just rather stupid and wasteful to have a yard of nothing but grass. It gobbles up the water and gives you little, except green.

We're going to turn the space between the sidewalk and the street into an herb garden, where the neighbors can come by and snip some herbs for dinner. If some neighbors get greedy and take too much, we'll have our private stash up on the roof.

The weather was so good I pulled
out the Total Gym on the roof and did some exercises in the sun. I couldn't believe how quickly and easily I burned. No, I didn't use any sunscreen at all, like a fool. But I was only up there for around an hour, and that was in and out of the house and moving around a lot. Still, I think there's something wrong with the ozone layer. I burn SO much faster than I ever used to. Or is my skin just getting old?

Speaking of restaurants (was I?), one of our favorite pizza joints, LATE NIGHT PIE, is expanding into an abandoned building just a BLOCK away from the house! This is just too awesome! When we would order from them, they would deliver ON FOOT. And that was when they were five blocks away. Now, shit, they can just TOSS the pizzas over here.

LATE NIGHT PIE!! Things just get better and better.
