On December 5, 1484, Pope Innocent VIII's notorious "Witches Bull" (Bull Summis desiderantes) was issued, officially commencing the witchhunts. Historians estimate that victims put to death as a result ranged from 600,000 to more than 9 million, over the 250 years of the witchhunts. That's a pretty wide range - 600,000 to 9 million, but isn't that religion in a nutshell? (no pun intended). Anything that can't be easily explained gets a supernatural label. No doubt Christianity has come a long way since 1484 (Columbus was just about to set sail!), but it still has a long, long way to go, before it's finally put in the graveyard where it belongs.
