I wonder how long it will take before we elect an atheist as President in the United States. Yeah, we are the "land of the free and home of the brave" and the religiously insane. But if a heavily Catholic country like Spain can do it, America can do it. But I won't hold my breath.
Spain’s New Prime Minister Is Atheist, Takes Oath Without Bible
Spain’s new Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is an atheist, and the the first Spanish Prime Minister to be sworn into office without a Bible or crucifix.
Sánchez, leader of the Socialist party, was sworn in Saturday as Spain’s Prime Minister, a day after scandal-plagued political rival Mariano Rajoy was removed from office in a no-confidence vote.
King Felipe VI conducted Saturday’s ceremony at the Zarzuela Palace on the outskirts of Madrid. Taking the oath of office, Sánchez said:
I promise by my conscience and honor to faithfully fulfill the obligations of the office of President of the Government with loyalty to the King, and to keep and enforce the Constitution as the fundamental norm of the State.
Sánchez used the word “promise” rather than “swear” in taking the oath of office, in accordance with legal language adopted to allow separation between church and state.
He was the first Spanish Prime Minister to be sworn in without a Bible or crucifix…
Before taking office Sánchez sent out an optimistic Tweet on Friday promising a better future for the country:
Spain starts a new page. A period to recover the dignity of its institutions. From responsibility, dialogue and consensus, it is time to work for equality, to build a country that does not leave anyone behind.
Sánchez is not the only world leader sworn into office without a Bible or other religious text. Last October Jacinda Ardern was sworn into office as New Zealand’s new prime minister without the Bible, and without reference to God.
Arden, a self-described agnostic who left the Mormon church after she realized she could not support justice and equality for LGBT people and remain a Mormon, is the nation’s youngest leader in more than 150 years.
Bottom line: Spain’s new Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is an atheist, and the the first Spanish Prime Minister to be sworn in without a Bible or crucifix.
