Live Earth link + schedules + reviews

TV ain't carryin' all of it. The website will. The video is a little choppy at this link, but the audio sounds pretty damn good.

I wouldn't expect a crappy product with Al Gore involved.
I'll try and do periodic updates...

7/7/07 3pm Central update:
I'm really enjoying all the concerts in "Live Earth." It's pretty damn cool to be able to span the globe, hopping to and from, while feeling some inspiration that is in rare supply today.
Today, I had a revelation...
Al Gore is running a zen campaign, indeed.
No campaign. (and yet, he's leading many polls)
He keeps saying that he has no plans to run for President.
He doesn't expect to run.
He keeps saying that he does not deny that the Presidency of the United States has unparelleled powers of persuasion to "get things done," but he's trying a new tack to persuade people about climate change, outside the "system."
He created the slide presentation and has presented it over 1,000 times around the planet.
But it wasn't enough, so it morphed into a book and movie, "An Inconvenient Truth." No doubt these efforts turned at least a few heads.
I recall hearing Al (Gore) say that this global concert "Live Earth" is being done because the movie and book "haven't done it." Meaning that, what changes have been made are not "enough" to produce that "tipping point" when rapid change becomes possible. The concerts are a way of reaching even more people in an attempt to form a critical mass of people calling for action on climate change.
Nothing has been "enough".... yet ....
This concert series will reach millions, if not billions, of people. Billions? Doubtful. But, really, I think that most of the people that are tuning in, or are attending, are already "on the team."
Sure, there is always just a little more that each person can do, like hold that stick of incense up to your windows to see if there is a draft, and if there is, apply some caulk.
But we are already on the team.
Come another month or two, perhaps after the status report on the "surge" in Iraq reveals things have only gotten worse, the verdict on the "Live Earth" concerts will come in.
It wasn't "enough."
Sure, they traded carbon credits and were able to have a "carbon-free" concert, recycling waste, plastic and providing compost to local communities, but there still is no critical mass among the people or among Congress or in the world community to be able to say that yes, things are going in the absolute right direction now.
Leaving only one choice for Gore.
He will eventually have to admit that the last, only, and best way to really effect change, is from the Oval Office, the Presidency of the United States, and use that unparelleled power of persuasion.
He will accept this reluctantly, in keeping with our Founding Fathers hope that only those persons devoid of ambition, only those persons drafted into service by their fellow citizens to serve, if somewhat reluctantly, would step forward to lead the nation.
And he will be able to begin to right so many wrongs that the people of the world will be inspired to make the next evolutionary leap into a welcoming future.
One can dream.

CONCERT PROGRAMS (All programming and running orders subject to change) (click on the blue hyperlinks). I sure hope they rerun most of these concerts. Some pretty good stuff.

LIVE EARTH NEW YORK at Giants Stadium
KENNA
TAKING BACK SUNDAY - metal; why so much metal in the US? I thought we'd outsourced everything.
KEITH URBAN - tolerable, for country. more of an "urban" type of country
LUDACRIS - not interested, same ol same ol
AFI - tone-deaf androgynous metal? yuk
FALL OUT BOY - too loud, too fast, too unintelligible
AKON - at least there's a discernable melody now and then

LIVE EARTH LONDON at Wembley Stadium
GENESIS - missed them; hope I catch a rerun; no Peter Gabriel?
SNOW PATROL - tasty angst pop
DAMIEN RICE AND DAVID GRAY - I recognize that; acoustic pop
KASABIAN - too heavy rockin'
DURAN DURAN - still love a lot of their stuff
RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS - I never have "gotten it" with these guys
BLOC PARTY - I'll walk the other way
CORINNE BAILEY RAE - a "one-hit" wonder? nice rendition of "What's Goin' On?"
KEANE - a 3-man band, but one guy only sings; not bad; amazing what you can do with electronics these days
SPINAL TAP - still silly after all these years
JAMES BLUNT - oh, so THAT'S James Blunt. I'm getting an education.
PUSSYCAT DOLLS - nothing like raw sex appeal; "I bet you wish your woman was a freak like me." Uh, yeah, and looked like you too.
FOO FIGHTERS - wall of noise; I've already lost too much of my hearing
MADONNA - what an over-production

LIVE EARTH SYDNEY at Aussie Stadium
BLUE KING BROWN - good stuff
SNEAKY SOUND SYSTEM - great dance music
GHOSTWRITERS - rock, eh!
PAUL KELLY - sorta "folk"; nice
ESKIMO JOE - more angst-filled, minor-key pop
MISSY HIGGINS - more folk, eh!
JOHN BUTLER TRIO - interesting, big sounds from a trio, worth a second look
WOLFMOTHER - too heavy for my taste
CROWDED HOUSE - blast from the past

LIVE EARTH HAMBURG at HSH Nordbank Arena
SHAKIRA
MIA
STEFAN GWILDIS - "Dancin' in the Streets" in German, cover tunes
MARQUESS
MARIA MENA

SAMY DELUXE
JAN DELAY
ENRIQUE IGLESIAS - Pop goes the Latin.
REAMONN - English singer; eh!
LOTTO KING KARL - German rap? no gracias, por favor!
REVOLVERHELD - German poprockers; ride that angst, baby, in your preppy sweater; hey, where's the caption guy?
CHRIS CORNELL - ex-Soundgarden singer has little else than his voice
YUSUF - nee Cat Stevens

LIVE EARTH TOKYO at Makuhari Messe
GENKI ROCKETS - missed them
RIZE - too punk for me

HUANG XIAO MING - slick pop with scantily-clad women; what's not to like? da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da-da; deep lyrics
WANG CHUAN JUN AND WANG RUI - sappy; probably hard to have much of an "edge" in China, still.
12 GIRLS BAND - how nice; can't get political if you don't sing; some of this back-up music has to be canned; classical musics "greatest hits" how odd...

GARTH BROOKS - "We Shall Be Free." Where's Garth been? Will this appearance be his "Dixie Chicks" moment? I see Tipper Gore in the audience, taking pictures. And there's Al, clapping out of rhythm. But maybe it's just the choppy video.
TRISHA YEARWOOD - only one tune? with Garth?
BLUES NATION - a Native American blues band? man, do they have the right to play the blues?! too bad they're not too good

LIVE EARTH KYOTO (Special Broadcast Event)(not representative of running order; TBA)
