Magnetic storms

In the first week of August, the sun launched some intense solar flares, which resulted in fierce magnetic storms on Earth. The aurora borealis could be seen as far south as Nebraska, resulting in some pretty cool pictures.

I wonder what the native Americans thought about the northern lights? What message did they think the gods were trying to convey? I suppose Michelle Bachman and other religious nutjobs think that the northern lights are God's warning to us that we have to reduce our debt, or kill all the gays.
