The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), of which I am a member, gets a whole lot of hate mail. Vicious, nasty, profane, threatening hate mail and voicemails, often with very poor grammar. While one might expect a public organization to get its share of vitriol from the public, the level of garbage that FFRF receives is astounding, alarming, and pretty sad, especially when you consider that most, if not all of it, comes from Christians. Presumably otherwise "good Christians."
A lot of Christians sure must feel threatened by FFRF and like-minded atheists. Centuries ago, but not really that long ago, anyone bold enough to pronounce themselves to be atheist or a freethinker would most likely have been either stoned (as in throwing rocks at you till you're dead), burned at the stake, drawn-and-quartered, or some other equally grisly punishment. All for rejecting the orthodoxy of the day.
We no longer burn people at the stake in this country, but they still jail and kill atheists for being atheists in a too-large number of countries on Earth.
Why does the church feel so threatened by atheists? Why do average Christians feel compelled to spew vile vitriol at groups like FFRF who are only trying to ensure that this country respect the separation of church and state?
I may mock believers on this blog, but I never stoop to threatening them. I know several other atheists, and none of them do anything near what these "good Christians" do.
I have to presume that Christians are so insecure in their own beliefs that they are willing to tear down anyone and anything that they deem to be a threat to their faith.
And, just for the record, the FFRF (and myself included) don't want to abolish religion. You may practice whatever religion (or lack thereof) that you choose to in peace. Just keep it out of the government. You want to see what a nation that has an official religion looks like? Take a look at Iran, Saudi Arabia, or most other Muslim countries. I don't think ANYone, even intolerant Christians, want to see the U.S. become like them. Or at least I sure hope not.
Keep in mind that the following is just from ONE MONTH, and FFRF does not publish every one of them either.
