We're been on pins and needles this weekend, wondering how strong Hurricane Gustav was going to get and where exactly it was headed. You don't want to mess around with hurricanes.
We spent some time Sunday preparing for the storm: cleaning off the rooftop deck and setting up Harry Potter's closet (our hideout under the stairs) as a shelter.
Fortunately, for us, it looks like we here in Houston will be spared a direct hit. This afternoon at about 5pm, the sky darkened, the winds really kicked up and the rain began to fall - sideways. Looking at the radar, sure enough, one slim band of the hurricane was passing south thru Houston, right on top of us. Our lone tree was waving wildly in all directions and it got a little scary. It was just a tiny taste of what much of Louisiana was experiencing. If that's as bad as Gustav gets for us, it's enough.
Just a couple of hours later, we experienced a beautiful sunset. Another snapshot of the effects of Gustav. The picture doesn't do it justice, but it will look better if you click the pic.
But we know it ain't over, by a longshot. We could still pick up quite a bit of rain, maybe flooding, once Gustav gets further inland. And then, of course, Hurricane Hanna and Tropical Storm Ike are churning in the Atlantic, AND another THREE disturbances are headed this way from Africa. I don't think I've even seen SIX tropical disturbances at the same time.
Never pass up a chance to sit down or relieve yourself.
